Use Word Lengths Before You Trace
Treat the answer slots as a map of the board before committing to a route.
The word rack is not decoration. If the puzzle has answers of four, five and six letters, the open cells must split into paths of exactly those sizes. That turns a loose vocabulary search into a constrained packing problem.
Count before spelling
Read the theme clue, then compare each likely answer with the visible lengths. A promising six-letter theme word cannot belong in a four-letter slot. This simple check prevents many attractive but impossible traces.
Lengths also describe route geometry. A long word needs enough connected open cells to continue without revisiting a square. If a candidate start enters a pocket that contains only three cells, it cannot begin the six-letter answer unless there is a legal exit.
Reserve room for the longest answer
Short answers can often fit in several corners. The longest answer usually has fewer viable routes, so test it first. Do not submit merely because the letters spell correctly; look at the cells left behind. Every remaining answer still needs a connected route of its exact length.
When two answers share a length, the length-to-region match is no longer automatic. Use the theme and the endpoints together rather than guessing which slot owns which route.
Build a length ledger
At the start of a puzzle, write the unsolved lengths as a small ledger. For example, 4 + 5 + 6 = 15 tells you that fifteen open cells must be partitioned into three paths. After solving the four-letter word, the remaining eleven cells must still divide into connected paths of five and six.
The total is a necessary check, but it is not enough. Two disconnected regions containing three and eight cells also total eleven, yet neither can hold separate five- and six-letter answers. Count each region independently whenever a candidate path cuts the board around a wall or narrow passage.
Match length to shape, not just area
A region with six open cells does not automatically hold a six-letter answer. Those cells must form one non-repeating orthogonal route in the correct letter order. A U-shaped pocket may fit a turning word, while a branched six-cell region may force a revisited junction and therefore be unusable as one path.
Trace the geometry with your eyes before drawing. Count how many exits the likely start has, where the route must turn and whether the final letter can land on a plausible endpoint. This separates “six cells exist” from “a legal six-cell word path exists.”
Use duplicate lengths carefully
When two unsolved answers have the same length, do not treat their slots as interchangeable proof. The theme may suggest both words, but the board still decides which route belongs where. Compare rare letters, forced prefixes and endpoints, then test which placement preserves a legal route for the other word.
Suppose two five-letter candidates both need the same central cell. At most one can be accepted because paths never overlap. The right choice is the route that leaves another connected five-cell path, not necessarily the word you noticed first.
A quick pre-trace checklist
- Confirm that the candidate has exactly the required number of letters.
- Confirm that every step is horizontal or vertical.
- Check that the route does not reuse a cell or cross a wall.
- Subtract its length from the open-cell total.
- Verify that the remaining regions can match all unsolved lengths.
This checklist takes only a few seconds and prevents the most common Wend game error: submitting a convincing word without testing the board it leaves behind.
