Find Constrained Starts and Ends

Look for letters with few legal exits, then test the route from either direction.

A letter in the middle of an open area may have four possible next cells. A corner or a cell beside walls may have only one or two. Those low-choice cells are strong candidates for the start or end of an answer.

Begin where the board is least flexible

Match a constrained cell with the first or last letter of a themed answer of the right length. Then trace outward one orthogonal step at a time. Because accepted paths work in either direction, a stubborn word may become obvious when you begin at its final letter.

Rare letters help too, but they are evidence rather than proof. A visible V may suggest a word from the theme, yet the route must still use the exact authored cells and leave a valid partition for every other answer.

Test the residue

Before submitting, inspect what your candidate would leave behind. If it traps one open letter or splits five remaining cells into pieces that cannot match any unsolved length, the path is wrong even when its letters look tempting.

Rank cells by degree

The degree of a cell is the number of open orthogonal neighbors it can reach. A corner often has degree two. A wall can reduce that to one. A cell in open space may have degree three or four. Low-degree cells are valuable because fewer routes can pass through them.

A degree-one cell must be an endpoint of its answer: a path cannot enter and leave through the same only neighbor without revisiting a cell. A degree-two cell may be an endpoint or a forced corridor. Mark these cells first, then compare their letters with possible prefixes and suffixes of the unsolved answers.

Read words from both directions

An accepted Wend path can be traced forward or backward. If a constrained corner shows G and no likely answer begins with G, check whether one ends with G. Reverse reading is especially useful when a suffix is distinctive, such as -ING, -ER or a rare final letter.

Do not reverse only the spelling in your head; reverse the geometry too. Starting from the other endpoint may reveal a forced first turn that was hidden when the route was imagined forward.

Separate a clue from a proof

A rare letter, familiar prefix or strong theme association suggests a candidate, but it does not prove the route. Proof comes from satisfying all constraints together: correct length, legal adjacency, exact spelling, no overlap and a viable remainder.

For example, a corner Q beside U strongly suggests the start of a word, but several words may share that prefix. The answer length and the cells available after QU decide whether the route can become the authored word without trapping the rest of the grid.

Diagnose a failed endpoint

When a candidate fails, ask which assumption was wrong:

  1. Did the endpoint letter belong to a different answer?
  2. Did the word use the correct letters along the wrong cells?
  3. Did the route consume a bridge another answer needed?
  4. Did it create a region that cannot match any remaining length?

Keeping the incorrect trace visible for a moment makes this diagnosis easier. Undo only after you can name the contradiction. That habit turns trial and error into structured elimination.

Combine endpoints with the length ledger

Endpoint logic becomes strongest when paired with the unsolved lengths. A degree-one cell cannot sit in the middle of a path, and a three-cell pocket cannot host a six-letter answer. Match each constrained area to the lengths that could possibly occupy it, then test vocabulary inside that reduced space.
